Let's discuss how to mark an anchor chain and possibly rope, the rode. Marking your anchor rode can be a helpful way to easily reference the depth of your anchor when anchoring your boat.
The video starts with the anchor rode completely pulled out from the anchor locker. The anchor rode in the video is 50 meters long, consisting of 23 meters of chain and 27 meters of rope. The author suggests marking the anchor rode for easy reference when anchoring.
Here are the markings made on the anchor rode in the video:
Five meters from the end of the rode: a single black strip
Ten meters from the end of the rode: two black strips
Fifteen meters from the end of the rode: a blue strip
Twenty meters from the end of the rode: a red strip
Every five meters thereafter: a mark
The author recommends using engine enamel paint for the markings to ensure they stay on for a long time.
Here are some additional tips mentioned in the video:
The five-meter mark is useful to know when the anchor is about to come up.
The red mark indicates that the end of the chain is approaching.
It is important to not anchor too close to the bitter end of the rode, as wind and tide can cause you to drift.
The appropriate anchor rode length depends on your anchoring conditions and region.
