The Ultimate Marine Watch: A Deep Dive into the Garmin Quatix 7 Sapphire

Updated: Feb 26

On The Rudder Channel, we're big fans of Garmin devices. From Brooke's Phoenix 7s to my older Phoenix 5 and a Venue watch, we use them daily for everything from running and swimming to surfing and walking the dogs. But recently, I got my hands on the Garmin Quatix 7 Sapphire, and it's been a game-changer, especially for my time on the water.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The Quatix 7 Sapphire arrived in a standard Garmin box, and upon opening, I was immediately impressed. It comes with a stylish deep blue band and features the familiar five-button Garmin setup found in the Phoenix series. What sets this watch apart is its bright AMOLED touchscreen, a feature borrowed from the Venue series.

Setting Up and Pairing

Pairing the watch with my phone using the Garmin Connect app was a breeze. One of the standout features is the always-on AMOLED screen, which is incredibly vibrant even in bright sunlight.

Nautical Functionality: Where the Quatix 7 Shines

After using the watch for a few weeks, I'm genuinely impressed with its nautical capabilities. It's more than just a fitness tracker; it's a valuable tool for anyone who spends time on the water.

  • Quick Access to Essential Information: The watch provides quick access to sunrise and sunset times, weather updates, and tide charts, all crucial for planning any outing.

  • Seamless Integration with Garmin Devices: The Quatix 7 connects effortlessly with Garmin devices on your boat, such as chart plotters and Fusion stereos.

Connecting with Your Boat's Systems

  • Boat Data: By connecting the watch to your boat's data, you can display information like water depth, speed, and direction directly on your wrist. This is incredibly useful for staying informed while on the move.

  • Chart Plotter Control: The multi-function display remote feature allows you to control your Garmin chart plotter directly from your watch. While perhaps not essential for everyday use, it can be handy for making quick adjustments.

  • Fusion Stereo Control: This is perhaps my favorite feature. The ability to control my Fusion stereo from the watch means I can easily play/pause music, skip songs, and adjust the volume without having to get up.

Additional Features and Battery Life

The Quatix 7 also includes features like anchor drag monitoring, although I find I don't use this too often. The battery life has been exceptional. With the always-on display, I get about six days of use before needing to recharge. And with the battery saver mode, it can last even longer.

Final Thoughts

The Garmin Quatix 7 Sapphire is a complex and versatile watch that's perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors, especially those who spend time on the water. Its seamless integration with Garmin devices, combined with its robust nautical features, makes it an invaluable tool.
